The Big Green Beauty Regime: Issue One

Have you ever sat in the hairdressers after a cut and felt a little uneasy asking your hairdresser to hold the spritz of hairspray? I have, then consequently suffered a head rush from the chemicals and left having dry hair for the rest of the day. But think of the hairdressers, they have to work in an environment where they are in contact with a cocktail mix of harsh chemicals; this can’t be good for our bodies surely? Unless of course it is an organic hairdressers!
When it comes to what we consume through our skin, hair and nails, do you know how many ingredients you’re coming in to contact with? Do you know their industrial uses as well as cosmetic uses? If like me you always trusted the cosmetic market, it might be time to start reading labels, and coming to terms with the lack of regulation that the beauty industry faces.
The average woman is exposed to more than 150 chemicals though her daily beauty regime and we absorb around 60% of what we put on our skin. So, if our bodies are absorbing things like phthalates (which is a widely used compound to increase the flexibility of plastic), maybe we should consider understanding labels to start with!
In terms of cosmetic choice, if you are familiar with reading labels (as a lot of us are when it comes to food) then that’s great! If not maybe take on a few tips to ensure you are choosing wisely and maintaining a healthy consumer role. Take it upon yourself to read, research and regulate your own selections. Do not be put off by the excess of huge scientific words. If you don’t understand something on a label, look it up on the internet. Find out what you can on the ingredients found in the products you are about to use. Are they right for you? Much too often, the cosmetic industry label us into categories concerning sub culture rather than individual needs. Ask questions too: Have they been known to irritate the skin? Or dry hair? Have they been linked to cancer? Are they good for the environment as well as your body?
Do not be put off by unknown technical territory and instead put your faith in the product rather than continually in the cosmetic brands. Let’s opt for natural organic ingredients girls! We all want to stay vitalised, looking great and living long so use natural and plant based ingredients that will help maintain a healthy regime and are great for your body!
The great thing about nature is that it’s able to repair. Once a system is in place that benefits it, it will vegetate and eventually release its goodness. Don’t fear that you have damaged your body, be enlightened on a whole new market and be sensible with what you are letting yourself be exposed to.
