Picking Outfits For A Beach Party

Top tips for good value beachwear and beautiful maxi dresses from Next.

When it comes to choosing your summer clothes, warm weather should be on your mind – apparently temperatures will be rising this week, as we can finally look forward to some mid-20s action after one of the wettest months since records began.

Beachwear is a simple and fun way to dress – you don’t need to worry too much about accessorizing; it’s more about well-chosen separates and a few easy colour choices that complement your skin tone. You can even incorporate ethical choices into your swimwear, as this Guardian fashion feature indicates.

With beach parties in mind, your basics are: a killer bikini, and a wonderful cover-up. Added extras like hats, sunglasses and shoes take a back seat – or will no doubt end up getting lost if you do your partying properly…

Maxi dresses are a classic for spring, summer, beachwear, catwalk, everything nowadays. We’re actually quite partial the beachside mini dress from Geri Halliwell’s collection for Next. In a really deep, rich pink, it’s long sleeves make it evening-wear friendly too, and the short hem is screaming for some long tanned legs and a lot of dancing.

Choosing a simple, short style in a eye-popping colour will serve you well, as it’s best complemented by loose locks and slightly dewy, but golden and natural make-up. No one wants to get too smokey-eyed and formal at a beach party.

Another option is a sequined t-shirt that can be worn as a shift dress – or a shift dress that can be worn as a t-shirt. Here the more casual style is perfect for moving from pool or beach to dancefloor, with sequins and colour-blocking adding visual interest and fashion know-how.

We’d take this louche-yet-luxe look and throw in a pair of chunky wedges or thick gold strappy sandals – for the petite amongst us, wear the t-shirt as a dress. Ladies with more legroom to deal with, pair with a teeny pair of denim hot pants, or throw over a tight dress to add some definition. Sure-fire seaside fun, no matter what the weather does!
