NUS Extra: Why You Should Get One RIGHT NOW

September 18, 2012
By: Lauranne Heres

This week marks the beginning of Fresher’s Week at Kingston University. That means partying, induction classes, meeting new friends, experiencing your first trouble with administration, the poster sale, Fresher’s Fayre… And the NUS Extra team, selling you one of the best investments you’ll ever make as a student.

Let me clarify. Not only does the NUS Extra give you a discounted Fresher’s Ball ticket (at Kingston), and allow you to buy your Kingston hoodies for less, it also gives you discounts in pretty much every shop you’ll ever want to go in. And online.

In Kingston alone, you could save 20% off your bill at Frankie and Benny’s, get a free burger or McFlurry at McDonalds when you buy a meal, save 10% at Accessorize, save on your 16-25 railcard, get cheaper driving lessons with AA, get 5% off at Amazon (my personal favourite), save when you go to Chessington World of Adventures, or get 25% off the student price at Odeon cinemas (my other favourite).

Now if that wasn’t enough to get you running to the marquee and buy one, or order it online, think of it this way. Not every shop accepts your student ID as a valid discount card. Superdrug certainly doesn’t, and I don’t know how I could have afforded as many things as I did over five years with my card (the card needs to be renewed every year). Christmas presents are a lot cheaper when you buy them with discounts, and going to the cinema a LOT is even cheaper when you combine all available discounts.

Yes, it’s £12 for a piece of plastic, and ‘my student card always did the job so far’ you’ll tell me. Well think again and remember, we’re in a recession, and anything that makes you save money in the long run is a done deal. Just think of all the things you could do with what you save… Holiday anyone?
