MMU Fresher Guide

September 14, 2012

As fresher week draws closer it is time for a whole new bunch of Manchester Metropolitan University freshers to fill Manchester’s bustling streets. Along with worrying about leaving friends, relationships, and family at home, new students will have to cope with starting a whole new life in a new city. Therefore MMU HerUni has decided to give you a few guidelines to make the transition into your new life as easy and enjoyable as possible.

  1. DO NOT hide out in your room.

Although moving away can be a hard transition to adjust to, don’t hide away in your room no matter what. The best thing for you to do is to make an effort and get to know your new flat mates, after all they are going through the same thing as well and you will be living with them all year.

  1. DO NOT blow your loan.

For most people, student loans are the biggest amount of money you have ever received in one go. However do not be tempted to blow it all on one wild fresher’s week, as although the memories, that you remember, will be great, living off baked beans for the next 3 months will not be.

  1. REMEMBER the people at home.

Although it is sad moving away from your loved ones to a new city, it is important to still remember they are there. A quick phone call, a Facebook message, or a hand written letter, is a great way of keeping in touch with those friendships at home. You never know, you might be able to get them to travel up for a night out with all your new university friends.

  1. EXPLORE Manchester.

Manchester is a great city, the night life, the bars and the shops are hidden gems waiting to be discovered by freshers every year. Whether having a cup of tea in a cute, kitsch tea shop in the Northern Quarter, or dancing all night long at Sankey’s night club. There is so much to experience during your time at university, so do not waste it.
