Marilyn Monroe: An Icon 50 Years On
August 5, 2012
By: Faye Smith
It was 50 years ago that Marilyn Monroe’s housekeeper, Mrs Eunice Murray, discovered Marilyn dead in the middle of the night. She was found dead at her Los Angeles home from a barbiturates overdose.
Throughout her life, Marilyn Monroe lived the high life in the world of Old Hollywood. It was a time when Hollywood was truly glamorous, and Marilyn Monroe was one of the most influential Hollywood actresses to date.
She was famous for those curves, that platinum blond hair, and her ability to turn heads wherever she went whether she was fully clothed or not. She was a star. She was also full of controversy, having married three times and being in the centre of the limelight with things that did not concern acting, such as affairs, nude modelling and the like. Her career kickstarted when Marilyn famously created a “nude calendar” picture, and she ended her career being fired for the film Something’s Got To Give by being late on set. It is safe to say that her short life of 36 years was indeed a whirlwind, and it is also safe to say that we will always continue to be fascinated by this Hollywood superstar, blond bombshell, and wonderful woman for now and for many years to come.
Stylist Magazine have posted an article on their website today about the strange ongoings surrounding Marilyn Monroe’s death. Was it suicide? Was it a tragic accident? Or, was it in fact murder? There will always be conspiracies and theories as to what happened this night 50 years ago, but who will truly know other than Marilyn Monroe herself? You can read the article here.
Let us remember the beautiful and talented actress she was. Perhaps watch My Week With Marilyn, starring Michelle Williams, in her honour. It is out on DVD and Blu-ray.

And here are a few life lessons by the phenomenal woman herself. Click on image to get larger version.
